Iris Van Herpen’s Spring 2011 collection is computational couture at its best. It is this precise combination of mathematical play and patient handiwork that makes Van Herpen’s work mesmerizing.
The garments are architected to shelter the body like armor and created from slivers of layered and laser-sintered plastic. It’s fashion designed in an entirely new language borrowed and then reinterpreted from fields of product design, architecture and computation.
Speaking to Dazed Digital, Iris Van Herpen spoke about her collection:
“It’s a mix of everything. It’s important to work round the body, and my work is about fabric, shape and new techniques. I used a lot of fabrics commonly used in architecture –I like to bring new techniques into fashion, because otherwise I cannot breathe nor continue creating.”
And we all want Ms. Van Herpen to continue creating.
