The Great Hall in the New York Hall of Science building was a fitting venue for Diana Eng’s Maker Faire NYC technology fashion show. The cathedral ceilings and backdrop of stained glass windows gave the show an ethereal feel, as if one were praying at the alter of wearable technology. Diana Eng describes her collection as being “inspired by fairytales, sea creatures, and tea parties.” Her designs were created with “math, science, and technologies such as deployable structures, microcontrollers, and number patterns.” In a presentation filled with whimsy and imagination, it’s only fitting that the show closed with the Floating Dreams Dress, a white silk chiffon dress buoyed by white helium balloons containing LEDs. As the balloons were released and floated to the ceiling, an LED twinkling “sky” formed above the crowd. It’s fair to say that everyone at the show wished upon an LED star that day.
