“132 5. Issey Mikake” is Miyake‘s latest innovation that explores novel fashion manufacturing methods using emerging technologies.
“1” signifies a single piece of fabric; “3” and “2” refer to the three-dimensional shape which can be flattened into a two-dimensional form; and “5” is a reference to the fifth dimension. The fifth dimension, according to Miyake, is the precise moment when the garment is worn on the body and comes to life “through the communication among people.”
Jun Mitani’s gorgeous orgimai
The project is a collaboration between Miyake’s lab and Japanese computer Scientist Jun Mitani, who developed software that allowed him to construct three-dimensional origami forms from a single sheet of paper.
Miyake utilized Mitani’s algorithm to create dresses and skirts from a single piece of cloth. The three-dimensional garments are not cut or sewn; instead they are folded with permanent pleats. Invisible snaps allow the garment to be adjusted and fitted to the body. “132 5. Issey Mikake” is beautiful example of how technology and fashion together can collaborate and innovate.
