From ergonomic keyboards to furniture, designers have been trying to resolve the problem of occupational injuries by developing products that help users maintain “healthy” postures. BACKUP, a wearable concept by Vanessa Schauer, aims to prevent such injuries by coaching wearers to adopt new behaviors and “memorize” healthy body posture.
Shoulder strap
BACKUP is a two-part wearable system that comprises a shoulder strap and belt. Body posture is monitored with sensors embedded into the shoulder strap. When the wearer is slouching, a vibrating motor located in the belt, is switched on alerting the wearer to adjust his posture.
Lilypad Arduino, Vibe Board, and Accelerometer used for development of prototype.
The wearable is intended to be worn under garments and requires an initial calibration by the user.
