Nancy Tilbury, a course Director for a new postgraduate Fashion Programme at Kingston University, envisions the future of couture as digital skins cultivated in a nanotech atelier. From electric nanobits that travel through veins to chemical couture fashions in the form of digestible pills, Tilbury creates an evocative and downright sensual portrayal of the future of haute-nanotech fashion in the year 2050.
Digital Eyes as intimate signals
Unlike other science fiction portrayals of cyborgs and the blending of human flesh with technology (a la Iron Man), Tilbury imagines a radical future where flesh will be cultured from biological experiences that excite the mind, body and soul. Fashion thereby becomes an extension of our sensual and experiential selves that is expressed in a diaphanous atmosphere surrounding the body.
Electric Nanobots traveling through the veins to light and excite after dark play
Hollywood can learn a thing or two from Nancy Tilbury’s futuristic vision — and I am left genuinely breathless and in anticipation awaiting to see these brave ideas trickle into our cultural consciousness.
