Check out this amazing knitcrocheted critter titled “RoboKnit: Hello, World” created by Osamu Iwasaki and Hanakomet. The critter takes the form of our lovely planet earth and is nicely designed by Hanakomet to house the electronics. I love the movement of the creature — how it scuttles across the pavement. Personally, I would love to see a hundred of these deployed in an area, especially if embedded with the ability to sense environmental pollutants, for example, and report back.
On a different note, wouldn’t it be great if children’s toys lost their PVC exoskeleton and adopted a soft, knit shell instead?
Both Osamu Iwasaki and Hanakomet have nicely documented their process on their flickr stream.
