Coding Cloth: The Future of Wearables

Australian Network for Art and Technology (ANAT) recently published Coding Cloth, a Filter Magazine. The issue, a must-read for anyone interested in wearables, consists of a variety of articles written by pioneers in the field that discuss topics of electronics textiles and the future of wearables.

Two of my favorite articles were written by JoAnna Berzowska and Sabine Seymour. Berzowska predicts "that the future of wearable technologies is deeply centered in the social and cultural sphere." She envisions social networking companies such as Flickr, Blogger, Facebook, etc moving off the screen and onto the space of the body via the help of wearable technologies.

Berzowska envisions that "Garments will soon become the new playground for digital social networking technologies, as software slowly seeps off mobile phones and into illuminated zippers that display when you have been “poked” on Facebook; flowers that open and close to reveal the status of your social relationships; or furry spots that appear when a new post has been uploaded."

Seymour's article delved into a nice discussion regarding the expressive value of wearable technologies. She used two of her student's work to illuminate the concept (more to the come on those projects).

Seymour surmises that "By incorporating electronics into a garment we can transform traditional fashion elements such as colour, texture, and cut to include movement, touch, light, sound and interactivity for added tools of communication."
