Designing Fabric Interactions

"Designing Fabric Interactions" (DeFInt) is my master's thesis work at Media Lab Helsinki.

DeFInt is a series of e-textile interface elements that explore different methods of integrating knitted fabrics with basic electronics. The project aspires to investigate the existing interactions and our material understanding of fabrics to find opportunities for creating interesting and fun interfaces.…

Soft Circuitry with LilyPad Arduino at GAFFTA - April 2nd and 3rd, San Francisco

Soft Circuitry with LilyPad Arduino

Lara Grant will be teaching a weekend intensive course at Gray Area Foundation for the Arts (GAFFTA) April 2nd and 3rd. This course will cover the basics of electricity, circuit building and the techniques and materials used to make soft circuits. Workshop participates with be given a short overview of soft circuitry in the context of wearables, art and technology and will be given project based instruction through…

Blush mask

While working with soft sensors, I constructed a mask which has a soft sensor embedded in the lips. When the lips are touched or kissed, the cheeks of the mask will blush via red LEDs on the inside of the mask.

This examines the horrifying inverse relationship between hygiene and intimacy in our world which is more and more obsessed with cleanliness every day.

Watch the…

Textile perfboard

Our textile perfboard has been added to our products on

This is a knitted fabric that is being developed to solve the lack of 100% soft textile perfboards. It is a striped fabric with a 2.54 mm (0.1") pitch (the same one you find on standard perfboards) so you can attach components, even IC's, with little effort. Non conductive stripes are alternated to conductive stripes,… Continue

Temperature Sensing Coffee/Tea Sleeve

Right now I am challenging myself to make a soft circuit project every weekend and this week's project was a coffee sleeve with LEDs and a temperature sensor from Aniomagic. It was inspired by their tutorial on 'smart coaster' and translated from plastic/wired to a fleece and soft version.

Above is a pic of the finished sleeve - the LEDs… Continue
